History of NGO Status
Creation of the United Nations
The UN was founded in 1945 to create global dialogue, to ensure peace and international stability. Its goal is to promote global well being, peace, justice, equity, equality, development and more. It can only achieve these goals with the involvement of civil society- non-governmental organizations- this means people like you.
“The UN has 4 main purposes
To keep peace throughout the world;
To develop friendly relations among nations;
To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms;
To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals”

Civil Society is invited to join
In order to fulfill its goal of economic and social growth and inclusion, ECOSOC created a mandate and mechanism for civil society, in the form of non-governmental organizations.
“The Economic and Social Council may make suitable arrangements for consultation with non-governmental organizations which are concerned with matters within its competence. Such arrangements may be made with international organizations and, where appropriate, with national organizations after consultation with the Member of the United Nations concerned.”
United Nations Charter, Chapter 10, Article 71
“One of the main lessons I have learned the last five years as Secretary-General is that the United Nations cannot function properly without the support of the business community and civil society. We need to have tripartite support - the governments, the business communities and the civil society”
